NORA'S GLOSSARY

We each have our own language and while I have asked my colleagues to work in my language of EBR, they also have words that they use that mystify me.  Here are the ones I am unfamiliar with:

AEC Perspective:  From Jessica's EBR NEWS blog: "I have worked on many LEED buildings and am pretty well versed in the process from the AEC prespective" "  What's an AEC perspective?

Human Scale:  Designers use this term all the time. What does it really mean?  I understand "low rise" and "high rise" but do we actually know what human scale means?  I think it sometimes just means we like it. Wikipedia says: "Human scale is the set of physical quantities, and quantities of information, characterizing the human body, its motor, sensory, or mental capabilities, and human social institutions."  That tells me way too little when I think of what we discussed in the body module. It doesn't tell me whether it "fits" or not. Or how to help students design for it.

Sustainability: In design, the ability to create places that people care enough about to conserve--physically, socially, economically and emotionally...at least for the moment, that's my definition

  1. I like the "Nora's Glossary" concept... Maybe because I know a thing or two about being lost in translation. Thanks for having a sense of humor about it.
